Polari - the lost language of gay men

Ever wondered where the term 'cottage' came from? Then read on

Polari was a form of secret conversational language used mainly by gay men, female impersonators and others from the 1930s to the 1970s, mostly (but not exclusively) in London. In lots of ways, Polari was a form of protection - it allowed gay men to have conversations, sometimes in very public places, without the risk of their sexuality being discovered. The profile of Polari was raised through the comic antics of Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Williams and their characters 'Julian and Sandy', hugely popular in the 'Round the Horne' radio programmes of the 1960s.

The decriminalisation of male homosexuality in 1967 together with changes both in legislation and improved public acceptance of LGBT people has meant the need for Polari has all but disappeared. Join us for an interesting talk by Professor Paul Baker as he tells us why Polari has become the lost language of gay men.....
